Abstract

School zoning policies aim to reduce disparities in access to education and provide more equal opportunities for students in various regions. This research evaluates the implementation of the zoning policy at SMP Negeri 3 Wonosari and its impact on educational equality in 2024. Using a qualitative research approach, data was obtained through observation, interviews with school principals and teachers, as well as documentation analysis. The research results show that zoning policies are effective in expanding access to education, especially for students in the surrounding area, as well as reducing the pressure of academic competition in the admissions process. However, limited infrastructure such as classrooms and laboratory facilities is the main challenge in implementing this policy. Additionally, there are variations in academic ability among students from different zones, which schools address through IQ and EQ tests and class groupings. Zoning policies also simplify administrative processes and encourage responsiveness by involving input from the community in school management. Despite infrastructure limitations, zoning policies support more equitable and accessible education for students in Gunungkidul, with SMP Negeri 3 Wonosari continuing to adapt to maintain quality and equality of education for all students.
